We asked you to share your vision!

The need for transgender and gender affirmative care is on the rise and, moreover, the needs of transgender people in care are changing. This has been the subject of much discussion lately. But what do people who are personally affected by this think about this? We would like to hear that in this study!

Update 29/07/2022

The focus groups are completed!

All focus groups are completed, so unfortunately it is no longer possible to sign up for this research. We are delighted that we were able to organize 18 different focus groups with 90+ participants in total. We want to thank all participants for their valuable contribution!

What are we doing now?

Currently we are transcribing and carefully anonymizing all data from the focus groups. Afterwards we will thoroughly analyze the focus groups and everything that has been shared with us in order to understand everything as well as possible. Our analyses will be published in a report.

Would you like to be informed on the progress of our study? Then fill in your email address below and we will send an update in autumn!

… and would you be willing to share your own experience and vision about the increase in demand for transgender care and the changing demands in care? We are looking for you!

Within this research project, we refer to transgender as an umbrella term for all variations in gender identity, binary and non-binary. We realize that this terminology is not the best fit for everyone, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

about the focus groups

Online group interviews

This research consisted of group interviews (in the form of focus groups) which took place online in June-August 2022.

As a participant, you will contribute to one focus group that will last 1,5-2 hours, and you will receive a compensation of 40€.

Each focus group consists of 6-10 participants. The focus group is led by a researcher from the Platform (see below) together with another moderator. The moderator is someone who also belongs to the specific target group of the focus group and/or has a strong affinity with the target group.

The focus groups are organised online via Zoom. We will record audio and video. After the meeting, the conversations will be transcribed and all names will be changed to pseudonyms. In that way, we will make the data as anonymous as possible. Note that the other participants of your group will know your identity. It is, however, mandatory for all participants to sign a nondisclosure agreement before the focus group takes place.

Before the start of the focus group, you will receive an informed consent form which contains more information about your privacy, as well as your possibilities in discontinuing your participation in this study.

About the research

About the research

Transgender care, the increase in demand for care, and the changing nature of care issues have been increasingly in the spotlight in recent years. Particularly the  the “why” question behind  the increase in demand for transgender care remains a topic of discussion.  Based on requests by Dutch ministries, ZonMw, the Dutch institution for health research and innovation, commissioned various research projects linked to care for transgender people.

In response to this, the interdisciplinary Platform Diversity in Sex and Gender conducts this research. Our research group is working toward an evidence-based explanation for the increase in demand for care. We take into consideration social and societal changes, investigate the perspectives of a broad range of transgender persons, as well as care professionals, and zoom in on the role of media. The research consists of multiple subprojects, of which one is these focus groups.
